Amidst melodies of French electro pop, event goers of all ages filled the Echoplex over the weekend for the Vans sponsored “Classic & Los Angeles” party. NuCalifornia provided art instillations and paired up with Vans to design free merchandise. Fans used the hashtag #VansClassicLA with photos of the event to win free shoes or limited edition NuCalifornia t-shirts. The all-ages show granted access to view Vans’ newest 2014 spring collection, showing off a new color scheme to the classic trademark sneaker.
Lights dimmed and background beats faded as opening act Cardiknox warmed up the stage. Amidst the fog on stage, frontwoman Lonnie Angle propelled the crowd back to the eighties with their new-wave electro-pop track, “Technicolor Dreaming.” With catchy hooks and vibrating beats, the New York natives successfully tickled the crowd’s fancy as everyone danced together. Angle’s rich vocals and fellow bandmate Thomas Dutton’s brilliant use of synths bounced off one another beautifully, complimenting each other on the stage.
Superhumanoids drew a small crowd of diehard fans and happenstance event goers. By no means did Superhumanoids play down to the crowd. With their dream pop ambiance and mesmerizing drumbeats, the four-piece group triumphed, leaving a lasting impact on the audience. The luminescent glow of pastel light cascaded past lead singer Cameron Parkins’ face and onto the crowd. A soundtrack to a dream, Superhumanoids stand to make their name known in the dream pop and shoegaze scenes. They showcased most of their new material from their new debut album, Exhibitionists, out June 11th. The ensemble clearly has a passion for arts and music collaboration, as seen in their surrealist music videos. Their music set the creative tone for Vans’ event, and was a clear standout act of the night.
