Conor Oberst is an American singer-songwriter best known for his work in the musical group Bright Eyes. He has also played in many other bands, including Desaparecidos, Norman Bailer, Commander Venus, Park Ave., Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, and Monsters of Folk.

Throughout the end of 2012 and the start of 2013, Oberst went on his first solo tour of North America and Europe with Ben Brodin on guitar and vibraphone for support. Although he was on his solo tour, he continued to play songs from his other projects as mentioned previously, including  Bright Eyes, Mystic Valley Band, etc. He also played his solo work.

Oberst’s solo record, Upside Down Mountain, was released on May 20 of this year. Oberst worked with producer Jonathan Wilson (Dawes, Father John Misty) and the Swedish duo First Aid Kit. The record, according to Oberst, is a return to an earlier style of his songwriting. Oberst explains how his album is like a language to Nonesuch Records.

“It’s more intimate or personal, if you will. Even if all my songs come from the same place, you make different aesthetic decisions along the way. For me, language is a huge part of why I make music. I’m not the greatest guitar player or piano player—I’m not the greatest singer, either—but I feel if I can come up with melodies I like that are fused with poetry I’m proud of, then that’s what I bring to the table. That’s why I’m able to do this.”
