Miniature Tigers is an indie pop band from Brooklyn, New York. The band consists of Charlie Brand (vocals and guitar), Rick Schaier (keyboard and vocals), Algernon Quashie (guitar) and Brandon Lee (bass). The band’s sound combines elements of indie rock, synthpop and dream pop. Miniature Tigers went on their first national tour in the fall of 2008. They have toured with big name acts, including Ben Folds and Fun, and they have also played the 2009 Monolith Festival.
In 2006, Rolling Stone listed Miniature Tigers as “one of the 25 best bands on Myspace.” They have also received favorable mentions from Spin, which included them in their “9 Hottest New Bands Playing CMJ 2008.” Death and Taxes awarded the band’s album Black Magic (2008) and their EP White Magic (2008) with 4 stars, and referred to them as “terribly endearing.” Their album, Tell it to the Volcano (2008) held one of their breakthrough singles “Cannibal Queen,” which was featured on mtvU and MTV2’s Subterranean.
Their latest album, Cruel Runnings, was released this year. The album was recorded in its entirety in Jamaica with producer Chris Zane (The Walkmen, Passion Pit). Miniature Tigers’ website states that the album is “something halfway between nostalgia and the ecstatic now, [it’s] an album that yearns for the recent past while staring open-hearted at what the present dares to bring.” Their website further states that Miniature Tigers has “written a record that’s eminently relatable, passionate but not without a healthy sense of perspective.”
