Jimmy Page is speaking out about the possibility of Led Zeppelin touring and playing together again, in a new interview with The New York Times. It’s been a question that’s been on fans’ minds for years, but according to Page, the problem stems from comments made by former member Robert Plant.
It’s been almost seven years since the classic band’s last reunion show, which was played at London’s O2 arena. In the interview, Page was asked about the possibility of another show, and he claims the band isn’t playing together because of some resistance from Plant. Page says he’s “fed up” with Plant “playing games.”
“I was told last year that [singer] Robert Plant said he is doing nothing in 2014, and what do the other two guys think? Well, he knows what the other guys think. Everyone would love to play more concerts for the band. He’s just playing games, and I’m fed up with it, to be honest with you. I don’t sing, so I can’t do much about it. It just looks so unlikely, doesn’t it?”
Plant has played with Led Zeppelin over the years–he’s done three major shows, plus a few shows at smaller parties and gatherings. In an interview with Rolling Stone in advance of the band’s deluxe re-release of the band’s first three albums, Plant expressed some major frustrations about the realities of Led Zeppelin getting back together again for another tour.
“You’re going back to the same old shit. A tour would have been an absolute menagerie of vested interests and the very essence of everything that’s shitty about about big-time stadium rock. We were surrounded by a circus of people that would have had our souls on the fire. I’m not part of a jukebox!”
They’re strong words from Plant, who went on to say that he’s not sure he wants Led Zeppelin to be the next big classic act to experience a touring revival. Claiming that many of the bands are touring out of boredom and not for the money, Plant said he didn’t want to do the same because he’s not bored. When asked whether Zeppelin would even put out some new music, he said, “You can’t be the marriage guidance clinic here.”
Page has spent the last few years in the studio, getting ready for the coming release of Led Zeppelin’s entire catalogue of studio albums. But it looks like until the two artists can come to a mutual agreement, a Led Zeppelin reunion won’t end up a reality.
