2014 marks the 10th Anniversary for the Pygmalion Music Festival, held September 25-28 in Champaign-Urbana, IL. To commemorate, organizers have brought such big names to the lineup as CHVRCHES, Tycho, Wooden Shjips and many more.
Founded in 2005 by Seth Fein, president of The Nicodemus Agency (Damien Jurado, Gemma Ray), Pygmalion has seen the likes of Cut Copy, Janelle Monae and Major Lazer over the years. With the fest now celebrating its 10th year, Fein has chosen to dedicate the 2014 installment to Josh Gottheil, a former resident of their community that made a great mark in the music that came to town.
When I was a kid growing up in Urbana, I’d only get to hear about these shows coming to town through older brothers and cousins, and the name Josh Gottheil was just kind of everywhere. After he passed away, his name just became iconic and synonymous with hard work, and the kind of DIY ethos that I’ve been in to for my entire life. This year we’ll be dedicating the 10th year of Pygmalion Festival to Josh with still-to-be announced events that will benefit The Josh Gottheil Memorial Fund for Lymphoma Research.
The Pygmalion Lit Fest, now in its second year, as well as The Made Fest, a newly curated event, will run simultaneously with the music portion of the festival. The former will include forum discussions with several authors, as well as a Lit Crawl through Champaign-Urbana, and the latter comprises of a two-day marketplace featuring some of the nation’s top handmade and vintage sellers.
All events will take place at multiple venues and outdoor show spaces throughout Champaign-Urbana, and see below for the initial lineup of this year’s fest, with additional artists to be announced late this summer.
