It was an all-star performance for Pharrell Williams at Coachella last weekend, featuring lots of big names and live performances of some of the last year’s best songs, including a few covers by the “Happy” singer.
For people who expected to come to the show and just see a performance by Pharrell, the set was full of surprises. From start to finish, the setlist read like a compilation of some of rap’s biggest hits from the last decade. First, Tyler the Creator joined the show for N.E.R.D’s “Lapdance.” Then, Gwen Stefani came onstage and made a guest appearance, performing her 2005 hit “Hollaback Girl.” Snoop Dogg came onstage to perform signature hit “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Beautiful”. Diplo came on for Major Lazer collaboration “Aerosol Can.” Finally, Nelly showed up to perform a rendition of “Hot In Herre”.
Of course, Pharrell played lots of his own music too, including his biggest hit, “Happy,” and lots of material off of his most recent album, G I R L. And of course, as if all of his success over the past year wasn’t enough, he was also a major player on Daft Punk’s newest hit album, Random Access Memories. His set included covers of the robot band’s “Lose Yourself to Dance” and “Get Lucky.” Finally, he performed Jay-Z’s “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It to Me)” and the 2013 hit track “Blurred Lines,” on which Pharrell contributed guest vocals for Robin Thicke.
Pharrell’s Coachella set served as an overall reminder of not just how many hits he’s had over the past year, but also how well he works with other artists and connects with them during live sets. For those lucky enough to be in the crowd this weekend, it was undoubtedly a one-of-a-kind experience. But if you couldn’t make it to Cali, we’ve got it all for you below.
