Kickstarter continues to prove how far fans will go to get as close to their music, and the artists behind it, as possible. The most recent example comes thanks to an unreleased album of Aphex Twin’s that has raised over $40,000, via the funding source.
Last week, a British record collector claimed he had been given a copy of the album Caustic Window by Aphex Twin’s own Rephlex Records in 1994, and that the album had only reached the test pressing stage, and was never released. He then announced he was offering it up for sale, for $13,500.
Users of online forum We Are The Music Makers immediately started up Kickstarter campaign to try and raise the money necessary to buy the record, and as of today have already collected $43,518.
According to NME, WATMM intend to place the album up for auction on eBay, and the profits will be broken down into thirds: Aphex Twin and Rephlex will get one-third, in royalties; another third will go to the Kickstarter contributors; the last third will be donated to a charity everyone votes upon.
And so, truly, Kickstarter has once again done a fantastic job of connecting the fans to the music. As one of the creators of the Kickstarter project page so eloquently puts it:
