Prince Fatty vs. Mungo’s Hi Fi – Prince Fatty vs. Mungo’s Hi Fi

A Perfect Mix

Reggae and Dub group Mungo’s Hi Fi and British sound and record producer Prince Fatty square off on Prince Fatty Vs Mungo’s Hi Fi. Ten songs, half mixed by Prince Fatty while the other half mixed by Mungo’s Hi Fi, provide an exquisite collection of reggae and dub tracks to keep your head bobbing throughout. There’s nothing new or unorthodox here but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Prince Fatty and Mungo’s Hi Fi brings the sound the people want, the sound the people expect.

A reggae album is not a reggae album without a track about marijuana. “Herbalist” featuring TopCat starts off the album, and just like nothing starts a night better than a spliff, this song gets the party going. “Under Arrest” is another fine track. The horn section shines here and the subtle police sirens in the background add a great feel to the whole vibe. Both of these tracks are produced by Prince Fatty, and his style is definitely reflected here. “SugarWater” starts off the the second half of the album, the portion produced by Mungo’s Hi Fi, and it’s a noticeable transition. The tempo slows but yet the groove is quite hypnotizing and the lyrics in the chorus (“Look at my face/ Look what your charm has done to me”) are extremely haunting. All the songs are spot on here but this track definitely stands a bit taller than the others.

Reggae isn’t for everyone. It’s one of those genres you either love or hate. If you are one of those that fall in the latter category this is definitely an album worth picking up. Everything is done right and if any flaws are present the ears just seem to glide over them. Prince Fatty and Mungo’s Hi Fi have created a great collection of tracks.
