Red Bull Music Academy New York comes back to Queens on Friday, May 16th to pick up where it left off with 2013’s Drone Activity in Progress. This year’s Hardcore Activity in Progress will try to up the ante. Whereas Drone showcased avant-garde rock artists, the 2014 billing will include performers from across the spectrum of metal, jazz, techno, noise, classical, hip hop, and more.

The stage is set at the venerable Knockdown Center, a brick and steel factory build in 1903 to manufacture doorframes until the operation was relocated in 2009. The venue now welcomes musical performances and has no trouble accommodating patrons by the thousands. Partiers gather to experience the gritty atmosphere and enclosing confines. A recurring tenant of the Knockdown Center has been the Red Bull Music Academy. The enterprise is now in its 15th year and tours around the world with over 500 annual workshops and events that spotlight artists at all stages of their career journeys.
Last year, Red Bull Music Academy held a number of great events in the Big Apple. March offered the United States of Bass in Manhattan. This was quickly followed by live DJ performances in Brooklyn as well as improvised duets.
Billed as a noise show, the Hardcore Activity event will cost 10 dollars and come with complimentary earplugs. Drone mixer Tim Hecker, grindcore rockers Napalm Death, Gunplay and innovative Scandinavian jazzers The Thing will all be featured. Also set to appear: Skullflower, Regis, Wolf Eyes, Bastard Noise, Lubomyr Melnyk, Joe McPhee/Chris Corsano, Clipping, Okkyung Lee, Yoshiko Ohara, Reg Bloor, and Gnaw.
