The Flaming Lips Release April Fool’s Stunt

The Flaming Lips are constantly coming up with new ways to shock people and are always up for trying new things, so it’s no surprise that the album announcement yesterday for The Flaming Side of the Moon was all an April Fool’s joke.

This April Fool’s prank has a lot more layers than most: The Flaming Side of the Moon is a real album, and it apparently does go quite well with Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. However, it is also part of a bigger project carried out by Funny or Die, who enlisted Fred Armisen and Michael Bay for the ruse as well.

As previously mentioned, this is not something new for The Flaming Lips, and their antics are all over the map. Members Wayne Coyne and Nathan Roberts both accompanied Kurt Cobain to visit punk rocker GG Allin in prison in 1990, and in 2013 the band made 1983’s The Flaming Lips 2nd Cassette Demo available for online streaming. One of their more outlandish recent stunts involved a chocolate skull with hard candy brain fluid inside, which accompanied the group’s Stone Roses cover album.

They have also begun collaborating with Miley Cyrus, in what will certainly be an interesting collaborative studio recording. They had planned similar pop takeover with Ke$ha, on a duo album called Lip$ha, but that unfortunately got cancelled.

You can watch all three of the Funny or Die sketches for this project below, as well as a 45-minute studio session that proves the album is real.
