The Flaming Lips Announce New Album “The Flaming Side of the Moon”

The Flaming Lips has released their new album, Flaming Side of the Moon, available in digital format. The album, which was designed as a companion piece to Pink Floyd’s 1973 original Dark Side of the Moon, is now available through all participating digital outlets.

A full streaming of the album and a combination of Pink Floyd’s original song with “The Wizard of Oz” can be found here. Also 100 vinly copies will be distributed to friends and family of the band. Flaming Side of the Moon is said to match up with Pink Floyd’s original album as well. Also, just as Pink Floyd’s album was rumored to sync with the “Wizard of Oz”, The Flaming Lips have also claimed to create this effect with their album. Fans are encouraged to play the new song simultaneously with the original. In an interview with USA Today the group stated “For ideal listening conditions, fans are encouraged to seek out the original Alan Parsons-engineered quadraphonic LP mix of Dark Side, but it will work with the album on any format.” When both songs are played together, the combination created truly emphasizes the Pink Floyd’s original. The Flaming Lips rendition gives the original a slightly updated rhythm.

The Flaming Lips is an American rock band which formed in 1983. The band, known for its psychedelic rock, signed with Warner Brothers in 1992. It seems that the band is highly interested in experimenting with older music and creating covers for popular songs. In one release similar to this recent project, in 2009 the Flaming Lips did a full cover version of the album Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. The album also featured Stardeath and White Dwarfs with Henry Rollins and Peaches. The Flaming Lips recently performed at the Amnesty International Concert in Brooklyn. According to Consequence of Sound, there is word that The Flaming Lips will be collaborating with other artists to create of cover of The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamond”.
