Black Flag @ Union Transfer 6/24

Black Flag has a new singer, and a new tour. The “Victimology Tour” will begin this May in Texas, and will arrive at Union Transfer on June 24th. Although the band has been in existence since the 70s, their recent journey has been a troubled one. During a November performance in Australia, lead singer Ron Reyes was fired and subsequently kicked off the stage. He was replaced for the show’s final two songs by professional skateboarder Mike Vallely. According to a statement from Reyes, Vallely told him, “You’re done, party’s over, get off, it’s over…” before taking the microphone from him. He wrote then that he wouldn’t be surprised if Vallely became the new singer for the band, and this January band founder Greg Ginn did just that. Ginn says, “Mike is the perfect frontman to capture what Black Flag was, is, and will be.”

The addition of Mike Vallely marks the fifth vocalist in Black Flag’s rather long history in the music business. The hardcore punk band, was formed in California in 1976. The band broke up in 1986, reunited in 2003, and then reunited again in 2013. The band, in its current formation, has since apologized for their disappointing 2013 reunion. The album What The… was met with poor sales, and the constant feuding between members new and old did not help their cause. In a Rolling Stone feature that begins, “Black Flag are sorry,” they admitted to “falling short in 2013” and promised to become a “stronger, more cohesive, tighter band” in 2014.

This time, they’re trying once again and bringing their newest incarnation to Union Transfer this June. The show will feature two openers. Greg Ginn will open the show with his “electronic, psychedelic, instrumental band” HOR. Also opening for Black Flag will be Cinema Cinema, a punk band from Brooklyn. The duo is comprised of cousins Ev Gold and Paul Claro. Join the fun (or, dysfunction) this June at Union Transfer.
