Pretenders founder and leader Chrissie Hynde is back, more than 30 years into her career, announcing the summertime release of her new album Stockholm. It has Hynde’s name on it, but it’s far from a traditional solo album, including track collaborations by some big name artists.
Hynde calls Stockholm more of a collaboration album than any album she made with the Pretenders. It features artists such as Neil Young, John McEnroe and Joakim Ahlund of the Caesars. She co-wrote the album with Bjorn Yttling of Peter, Bjorn and John in Stockholm’s Ingrid Studios, a location that was undoubtedly the namesake for the album. Stockholm‘s release will be introduced next month by the single, “Dark Sunglasses,” and the overall album is scheduled to be released in June.
Saying she wanted to make a “power pop album you can dance to,” Hynde compares her newest piece of work to a combination of ABBA and John Lennon. It’s the first album with her name on it, and even though she denies it’s a complete solo album, Hynde is proving she’s still relevant, after a career that kicked off in the late 70’s and carried her well throughout the 90’s. The only consistent member of the Pretenders throughout the years, the band has become her legacy, but she’s been well known for her collaborations with other artists throughout the years, including a wide diversity of names that include Sheryl Crowe, Frank Sinatra, Devo and Morrissey. The Pretenders were inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
