WATCH: Metallica Live Debuts New Song “The Lords of Summer”

Metallica unleashed their first new music since 2008’s Death Magnetic at their show in Bogota, Colombia this weekend. It was the band’s first concert of 2014, and with the new track they’ve boldly proclaimed themselves “The Lords of Summer.”

A new song from Metallica does not an album make, however – in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, guitarist Kirk Hammett said the band hadn’t “really started” work on their next album, continuing:

We’ve jammed on certain bits and pieces of music and figured out this piece of music works, this works, this doesn’t. But we’re still going through that process. James [Hetfield] has 800 pieces of music. I have 400 pieces of music. Once we figure out what pieces of music are actually gonna work for us, then we’re going to start turning those pieces of music into songs and seeing where that leads us.

Album or no, “The Lords of Summer” will still surely get plenty of play as Metallica continues their touring these next few months, making stops at several of Europe’s Sonisphere Festivals, including Sonisphere Knebworth, where the band will play alongside Iron Maiden at a British festival for the first time.

Until they make it to your neck of the woods for a show, revel in the quintessential Metallica glory that is “The Lords of Summer,” shot by a fan at the Bogota show:

And despite Metallica’s cancellation of their Orion Music Festival – which singer James Hetfield referred to as “financial disaster” – this year, there’s still plenty to keep the band’s fans happy.

In addition to the new song, Metallica Through The Never is also now available on DVD, as is their live set from Antartica. So keep those devil horns pumpin’, metal heads.
