Some artists cringe when their music is described as “pop.” The genre has become a place were once bold artists hide to play it safe. For some, though, “pop” is not only appropriate, but a compliment. From Michael Jackson to Madonna there are numerous musicians who live in this niche and thrive there. On Pharrell Williams’ latest album, G I R L, he not only proves he can create some of the most danceable beats speakers have had the privilege of playing, he also proves that he has the ability to craft brilliant pop gems.
“Brand New,” featuring Justin Timberlake, is a perfect example of a pop masterpiece. “You make feel brand new / like the tag’s still on me,” is not only catchy as hell but it is also relatable. “Hunter” sounds like a lost Bee Gees track but in a good way; a funky bass line accompanies Williams’ description of hunting his love prey. Barry Gibbs would be proud.
2013 saw a lot of success for Williams with his contributions to not just one but two huge hits; Robin Thicke’s “Blurred lines” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” The Despicable Me-featured single “Happy” is sure to follow in the footsteps of its recent predecessors. It is a perfectly constructed pop song and, as the title suggests, you can’t do anything other than smile stupidly while this song takes over the airwaves around you.
Williams knows the secret to pop success: Make them dance, give them a catchy hook and last but not least don’t overstay your welcome. These ten tracks live strictly by this credo. The lyrics don’t delve too deep, but that’s not what you’re here for. Besides, who has time to analyze lyrics when your feet and head are moving uncontrollably? Pharrell Williams has come a long way from producing “Rump Shaker” for Wreckx-n-Effects in the ’90s, and we are fortunate enough to have front row seats to watch this evolution.
