As announced in a recent mxdwn story, Big Boi, of the duo Outkast, has finally dropped his entry for the upcoming Game of Thrones inspired mixtape, and it is as blood thirsty as the show itself. Beautifully named “Mother of Dragons,” this 808 pounding, medieval string and drum driven, dark and powerful track is an ode to Daenerys Targaryen (a.k.a. Khaleesi). Showcasing this master of the spitten word’s verbal swordplay perfectly, Big Boi speaks on Khaleesi’s rise to the Iron throne, while taking jabs at the Lannister clan.
Whether a diehard fan of the show or not, this gritty display of the rhymesmith’s skills will blow your mind. To set the tone “Mother of Dragons,” begins with eerie quotes taken from the actual show giving it an added authenticity. Then before you know it, Big Boi, aka Sir Lucious Left Foot smashes you in the eardrum with the chorus “Dungeons, Dragons, Kings and Queens,” which is fitting considering Big Boi is one of the original members of ATL’s Dungeon Family, along with fellow Outkast member Andre 3000, and CeeLo Green of the Goodie Mob. Somehow Big Boi finds a way to speak on everything from his recent knee rehab for an injury sustained at an appearance last May, to Jon Snow and the Night’s Watch seamlessly.
An obvious fan of the HBO series himself, Big Boi continuously references characters and themes directly from Games of Thrones. To further prove this, Big Boi told Vibe, “Khaleesi, the Mother of Dragons is one of my favorite characters. The throne actually belongs to her and to see her plight to get back on top to where she belongs has been the thing. Last season ended with the Red Wedding when the Lannisters knocked everybody off.. like James Brown said, it’s the season to get the big payback.”
In a related mxdwn story the legendary duo Outkast that formed in 1992, announced that they would be going on tour together this Spring for the first time since 2002. In their plan to take the world back again, this tour will include two Coachella performances and one at the Governor’s Ball. Although many times a big tour announcement is accompanied by new material, Big Boi has confirmed that no new Outkast album is in progress. He said,”no,no,no. We’re just doing the tour only, just for the fans. That’s all it is, just the tour.”
The duo’s last album Idlewild which was released in 2006, also doubled as soundtrack to their musical film of the same name. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart and featured many songs from their 2003 certified diamond album, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.
The “Game of Thrones,” Official HBO Mixtape titled Catch the Throne will feature songs by Common, Wale, Daddy Yankee and more. All the songs on the mixtape will combine the artists vocals over beats made from samples from the show. Common told WSJ, “Twenty years ago, Wu-Tang was breaking ground, nowadays people are open to anything. There are no limitations to hip-hop culture.”
There is no exact release date for the entire mixtape at this time.
