Childish Gambino to Play Free Show at SXSW 2014 at Butler Park Stage at Lady Bird Lake

The start of SXSW is less than two weeks away, but organizers are still adding big names to the lineup. Even without tickets, you can still see few shows at the Butler Park Stage. SXSW just announced that Childish Gambino will play a show on Saturday, March 15, free of charge and open to the public.

Childish Gambino, known offstage as “Community’s” Donald Glover, has been busy this year. The comedian and rapper’s sophomore album Because the Internet went live in December, and he’ll spend the spring and some of the summer touring the U.S. and Canada, wrapping up the set with gigs at Hangout Music Fest in Alabama and the Governor’s Ball Music Festival in New York. Because the Internet debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 chart and received even more favorable reviews than Gambino’s first project, Camp. With guest appearances from Chance the Rapper, Azealia Banks and Jhene Aiko, Because the Internet has been praised for its polished hip-hop beats and honest, witty lyrics. Gambino produced the album almost entirely by himself, showing that he can wear a lot of hats on the production front, as well as with a diverse range of entertainment projects overall.

This is the third free show announced for the second weekend of SXSW, and it looks like it won’t be the last. Foster the People are scheduled to play on Friday night. Before Childish Gambino takes the stage on Saturday, “Take Me to the River,” music showcase and collaboration between Memphis soul legends, will perform live. SXSW is still set to announce a third night of shows on Thursday, March 13, and the times are all still up in the air for all of them. Ticket holders for SXSW can see the Childish Gambino show with their regular festival wristbands, but fans that are only catching the free show have to buy a guest wristband, either in advance or at the door.
