British band The Horrors are back with a fourth album and a brand new, seven and a half minute single. Luminous will be out May 6 and new track “I See You” is the first glimpse we’re getting of the album that the band says took 15 months for them to put together, along with co-producer Craig Silvey, who’s worked with names like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Arcade Fire and The National.
Luminous comes on the heels of 2011’s Skying, a rich, full-bodied, ambient album that landed The Horrors on several year-end “best-of” lists, with hit tracks like “Still Life” and “Changing the Rain.”
“I See You” is a longer anthem that feels more energetic than the band’s previous work. Channeling a rich synth line that explores a late 1970’s, psychedelic sound, the track manages to stay flawlessly current at the same time. If the rest of the album is anything like “I See You,” it’s easy to see why The Horrors decided to call it Luminous. The single keeps the band’s signature airy quality, but builds into an instrumental crescendo that keeps going several minutes after the lyrics have ended. Bass player Rhys Webb described the track as being a song that elevates, that crowds can dance along with, and lead singer Faris Badwan calls the sound more refined. Both seem accurate, and the first Luminous release has the potential to be encore material down the road.
Luminous is a ten-track project and will make its debut through XL Records on May 6.
