Lionel Richie is a singer-songwriter, musician, record producer and actor. His musical career started in 1968 when he joined the musical group Commodores, who was signed with Motown Records. Once parting from the group, he released his solo debut album in 1982 titled, Lionel Richie.
The self titled album included his number one hit “Truly.” With success from his hit single, his solo career blossomed; he was considered one of the most successful balladeers of the 1980s. His self-titled debut album hit No. 3 on the music charts and sold over 4 million copies. His second album, Can’t Slow Down, sold over twice as many copies and won two Grammy Awards, one of which was Album of The Year. This launched him into the first rank of international superstars. Richie has also received an Oscar for his 1985 single “Say You, Say Me” that was produced for the film White Nights. The single reached No. 1 on U.S. charts and stayed there for four weeks, making it the No. 1 song of the year (1985) on Billboards end of year Hot 100 chart.
In his later career, Richie released his tenth studio album, Tuskegee. The album included 13 hit songs. He collaborated with multiple country artists, including Jason Aldean, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Darius Rucker, Rascal Flatts, Kenny Chesney, Billy Currington, Little Big Town, Shania Twain, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffet. The album hit top of the Billboard 200 chart, which was his first number one album on the charts in more than 25 years. The album received Platinum status within six weeks of release.
