This May, Chet Faker brings his unique electronica soul sounds to the Union Transfer stage.
Chet Faker, born Nicholas Murphy, hails from Australia. In 2011, he recorded a cover of the Blackstreet classic “No Diggity” for his friends. Unexpectedly, the song went viral and would eventually reach #1 on Hype Machine. To avoid confusion with an already established artist of the same name, Murphy chose to go by an alternate name. The name – Chet Faker – was adopted with inspiration from jazz legend Chet Baker. In describing his choice of stage name, Chet Faker said, “[Baker] had this really fragile vocal style – this really, broken, close-up and intimate style. The name is kind of just an ode to Chet Baker and the mood of music he used to play – something I would like to at least pay homage to in my own music.”
Chet Faker has recently teamed up with fellow Australian artist, Flume, with the 2013 release of the Lockjaw EP. On combining forces, Flume stated, “His strengths are all my weekenesses and vice versea so we kinda complement each other. It’s a bit like a yin yang thing we’ve got going on.” The EP is only three tracks long but does much in the way of showcasing what the two are capable of when they join forces.
Chet Faker’s debut album Built on Glass is scheduled for an April 2014 release. You can currently pre-order the album on iTunes. While you anxiously await the release of the album, you can check out the video for the first single “Talk is Cheap.” Fans have been waiting for a long time for the release of the singer’s debut album. His first EP, Thinking in Textures, dropped in 2012. The long wait seems due to Chet Faker’s desire to perfect the album. Saying, “I always think, in the creative process, that the only time you know what you’re doing is at the start and at the finish. I keep thinking it’s almost done, scrapping things and adding more.” Well it seems that he has finally finished “adding more.” On February 11th, Chet Faker tweeted “Dear patient people. This is for you…” with a link to the album’s pre-sale. Sure to be worth the wait, head to Union Transfer on May 16th to hear Chet Faker’s new music.
