German rock band The Notwist has a new album waiting on the sidelines and they’re not wasting any time going on tour. Close to the Glass is expected on February 25th and the band has announced tour dates that will take them through the spring and into the early summer. They’ll spend most of the month of June in the States, hitting only the major cities, but have much more extensive tour planned for Germany and for Europe in general.
The band spent a weekend last summer close to the top of the bill at an Iceland version of ever-moving music festival All Tomorrow’s Parties. ATP is usually a thematic festival, picking bands that specifically complement each other, and The Notwist was among big names like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Thee Oh Sees and Deerhoof.
Last month, The Notwist released the catchy, lighthearted animated video for its newest single, “Kong.” The cartoonish style of Yu Sato’s “Kong” and the storyline in the lyrics is based off an actual event; apparently band member Markus Acher has vivid memories of being trapped in his childhood home with his family during an Ammer River flood in his hometown of Weilheim. The upbeat song comes as a bit of a departure from the band’s earlier dark metal work, and maybe it’s a refreshing change on the brink of a spring and summer tour. Close to the Glass is available to everyone starting February 25th and it looks like a small reinvention for a band that used to be known for its harder guitar sounds. If “Kong” is a good indication, fans have a lot to look forward to.
