Pattern is Movement @ Boot & Saddle 4/3

The Philadelphia duo, Pattern is Movement, will return to the stage this April in support of their latest installment. The self-titled album will finally drop on April 1st via Hometapes. The band will embark on a month-long tour beginning in March, and will finish up here in Philly for a record release party at Boot & Saddle on April 3rd.

The newest album is the fourth for the Philly natives. It comes six years after their last release, All Together, which was released in 2008. Having undergone various shifts in size and sound since their 2001 inception, Pattern is Movement now consists of just two members – founders Andrew Thiboldeaux and Chris Ward. They’ve released the first single off the album, “River.” The sound of the new album has drawn comparisons to the Dirty Projectors and even James Blake. With a wide array of artists cited as inspiration for the work, including Drake, Bruce Springsteen, and Outkast, Pattern is Movement is calling their 4th album “an entirely modern artifact right under your feet. It’s beautiful and pulsing. It’ll make you sweat.” And you can hear it all when it debuts on April 1st.

Opening for Pattern is Movement will be Yellow Ostrich, a Brooklyn-based band. Their newest album, Cosmos, draws its inspiration from founder and frontman Alex Schaaf’s studies of astronomers like Frank Drake and Carl Sagan. Schaaf spent nine months immersing himself in the wonders of the galaxy from a small windowless room. By altering the room’s lighting, he was able to reflect the arrival and passing of daylight every day. The title of the album itself is even drawn from Carl Sagan’s work; Sagan’s 1980 PBS series was entitled Cosmos. Schaaf described it in saying, “Something I really like about the Carl Sagan way of thinking is how it’s a very unironic and sincere amazement at how the world works. It’s one thing to be reading all these books and watching all these movies in a very small room…But trying to inject that pure amazement into day-to-day living in a big city is something completely different.”
