WATCH: Members of Pussy Riot Interviewed by Stephen Colbert

It should be no surprise that controversial topics are often tackled by those that are themselves controversial, obviously this is no exception. Steven Colbert of the “Colbert Report” having dealt with his fair share of controversial subject matter and using his unique brand of sarcastic humor recently interviewed two members of the Russian band “Pussy Riot”.


In usual form he began the segment by passive aggressively avoiding the name by way of refusing to say it yet rolling clip after clip of others uncomfortably reciting it. The interview, much less awkward than many of the recent ones seen on the media circuit, is the result of the approach taken by the talented host, something the newly free members of the band seemed to very much appreciate, a conversation ensued. The amazing thing is that it was accomplished through the use of a translator; needless to say it was difficult for other journalist, but Colbert pulled it off effortlessly. The members of the band seemed at ease exchanging jokes with Colbert.

The guests, two recently released members of Pussy Riot, caused quite stir when performing a protest song in a church in their home country several years ago. This led to an arrest and imprisonment because of negative comments directed at Vladamir Putin and the Russian establishment’s harsh laws against homosexuality. The topic is at the center of attention as some question whether the country should be allowed to host the Olympics while actively punishing the homosexual population with increasingly strict laws. After a few wise cracks Colbert asked, “Why were you arrested?” To which they responded, “Because we sang a fun song in church”. From there the women further criticized their governments lack of basic freedom’s, referring to the fact that in Russia they are not able to openly criticize or denounce religion.
