Thievery Corporation has a fresh product in the works. Among the most influential, long-lived electronica acts in the business, the Washington D.C. duo is set to release a new album, Saudade this April.
First track “Depth of my Soul” is a glimmering, lounge-act piece of sultriness that any Bond movie would be proud to have as an intro. It’s likely a hint as to what we can expect from the album. It’s taken them some time to come full circle, but Thievery Corporation intends Saudade as a tribute to the music that originally brought them together – Bossa Nova and jazz. It’s possible that their lengthy journey through the electronic never left the two a little exhausted – their last album, 2011’s Culture of Fear showed signs of burnout – and the duo has gone right back to where they started from.
This is no minor production. Five female vocalists have been brought on to sing on each track, and if they’re all as good as Shana Halligan – the siren responsible for “Depth of my Soul” – then we’re likely to have something very special on our hands come April.
