A trio of rock’s finest from the last 20 years joined genre forefather Lindsey Buckingham to close the Grammys, and it was pulled off with spectacular fashion. Until the show’s producers chose to cut the performance off before it was over.
Fleetwood Mac’s Buckingham teamed up with Trent Reznor, Dave Grohl and Josh Homme for what promised to be a rocksplosion at the end of the awards ceremony last night. It definitely started out as planned, as Buckingham put his signature guitar touch on NIN’s “Copy Of A,” then aided the group on a segue into QOTSA’s “My God Is The Sun.” Before the killer set of songs was over, however, CBS chose to cut to a commercial for Delta, then rolled credits as the group sang on.

Rolling Stone reporters have stated the actual live performance from the group wrapped up shortly after the broadcast ended, but that hasn’t stopped many in the rock community from being upset over what happened. This includes Reznor, who posted the following to his Twitter:
While Buckingham hadn’t been up for a Grammy last night, the trio of big names joining him on the stage were – QOTSA were nominated in three categories while NIN’s Hesitation Marks was up for Best Alternative Music Album. Grohl was the only one of them to take home a trophy, however, and he managed to get two: Best Rock Song for the collaboration he and his former Nirvana bandmates had done with Paul McCartney, “Cut Me Some Slack,” and Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, for the work he did for Sound City: Real to Reel. Ironically, both Reznor and Homme were included in that soundtrack, and the trio played together for its song “Mantra.”
