Rich Malowski, formerly of Mighty Six Ninety, and Adam Merrin of The 88 are releasing an EP from their collaborative project, Heavy Metal Anthem.
The new EP, titled Say Tonight, will drop on January 21 and features six brand new tracks. The band is relatively new, just forming in late 2013 when the two members met at an Eagle Rock record store and hit it off musically. The music they make together is influenced by musical styles that both musicians are fond of, like ’80s British indie music, ska and dancehall. Those influences are evident in the track “Lying in the Dark.”
The title track started out as their trial run at making music together, but it went so well that they continued the recording session, putting together five more tunes that rounded out the EP. Merrin also produced Heavy Metal Anthem’s debut EP.
“I’m so proud of the way Say Tonight came together. The process of recording and collaborating with Rich Michalowski was one of the most fulfilling experiences I have had in the studio. I fell in love with Rich’s songs on first listen and knew this was something I wanted to be involved in from the get go.
Michalowski’s formed Mighty Six Ninety in 2003, and the group made music and toured for five years in the US, Japan and the UK. Merrin’s group, The 88, continues to make music and tour internationally, even with his solo success and this side project. The 88 has had music featured in The Lorax, Bones, Grey’s Anatomy and How I Met Your Mother, and Merrin scored the theme song for Community.
