The artist announced her plans to leave Roc Nation on New Year’s eve with a follow-up message to her fans expressing interest in finding qualified peoples in various art, management and marketing fields. Some underlying attentions became clear this Summer when the director attached to a documentary featuring M.I.A., Diplo, Kanye West and others, leaked a teaser trailer to pressure the film’s release. Roc Nation pulled the trailer, prompting the director to leave, though the documentary is currently under production in the U.K. with a different team. M.I.A.’s relationship with Roc Nation continued to escalate in intensity when she threatened to leak her album Matangi in response to an 11 month delay in release. This tactic ultimately resulted in a hard November release date for the work.
Things are looking up for M.I.A. with the possibility of more harmonious management practices and a scheduled appearance at Ultra Festival this March.
