A new clip from the documentary I Dream of Wires features Allesandro Cortini and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor.
The documentary will premiere in spring 2014 and focuses on the history, fade out and return of the modular synthesizer. Aside from Reznor and Cortini, there will also be interviews with music industry names like Gary Numan and Legowelt, as well as interviews with manufacturers and industry leaders like Doepfer and Metasonix.
There is a companion to the documentary, too, called I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition, which features four hours of footage for hardcore synthesizer and electronic music fans.
Solvent is not only an interview subject and producer of the documentary, but provides its soundtrack as well. A new single by Solvent, which is featured on the soundtrack, can be streamed on Soundcloud.
Cortini has been a synth advocate and participant for years. In 2010, his project Sonoio released its first EP, along with the release of SuONOIO, a small synthesizer that let fans manipulate tracks from the album. The next year, Sonoio remixed its own track, “Scientist.” Cortini announced Sonoio’s new album in 2013, Forse Vol I, of which only 500 copies were pressed.
Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails have made a lot of headlines in 2013. Some of the high points included adding new members to the touring lineup, a co-headlining Australian tour with Queens of the Stone Age set for 2014 and the announced release of Tension in 2014. Some not-so-high points include Reznor denying a collaboration with Al Jourgensen, the death of concert photographer Andrew Youssef from cancer (which, on the bright side, rallied fans to donate) and the changing of managers for Nine Inch Nails.
