Noisy Disco
The Boston and Western Massachusetts punk scenes are home to some of the most inventive bands in the country. Combining noise-influenced instrumentals and squeaky Melt Banana style vocals, Guerilla Toss won’t exactly appeal to fans of more melodic and calm punk, but this record is a must-have for anyone looking for something atonal and stress-inducing. Putting out multiple records and splits a year, one might imagine that they would run out of ways to so enjoyably torture your ears, but Gay Disco is proof that this band has an endless supply of screams and feedback to put you on edge.
The opening seconds of Gay Disco in the song “Trash Bed” tell listeners exactly what is in store if they continue to listen to the album. The vocals are screechy and out of tune and the instruments are unexpected and not necessarily always on beat; if that’s what you were looking for, then you’re in for a treat. Now, just because the sounds Guerilla Toss produce are agitated and discordant, that doesn’t mean that they won’t make you get out of your seat and dance a bit, as they show in the song “Operate,” which has a definite beat you can’t ignore. The album closes on the track “Gay Disco,” a song that demonstrates just how much the band has utilized the noise style that is so popular in their home scene, even ending with a few seconds of static, a fitting conclusion to such a weird record.
