A chilly evening greeted ravers to LA State Historic Park for day two of HARD Day of the Dead. The mood was far from lifeless, though. Eager-faced kids waited patiently at the endless checkpoints with few looking burnt-out from the previous night or concerned about waking up the next day for school or work.
The schedule was packed with big EDM acts like Calvin Harris, Pretty Lights and Eric Prydz on the two big festival stages and niche DJ’s on the smaller Underground stage and in the intimate Discotheque tent. When not dancing in the pits, festival-goers could grub at food trucks, string a free candy necklace or find a dark corner of the park to chill.
As it got cold toward 10:30pm, packs of bikini-topped girls huddling for warmth headed for Deadmau5 at the main HARD Stage. A small group of in-the-know fans witnessed 73-year-old Giorgio Moroder drop vibrant, disco-laced beats in the tent nearby. Moroder, a pioneer in electronic music, has gotten his due recently after collaborating with Daft Punk on their summer release, Random Access Memories.
Toward midnight, the Deadmau5 set– in front of a crowd that reached to the front gate– screeched to a halt when a technical glitch sunk the park into uneasy silence. Joking that he was the “12th person in the world to fix it,” Deadmau5 finished the set strong before walking off stage promising to “blame a tech or something.” And, like that, at the beginning of a new day, HARD Day of the Dead expired but with the promise of reincarnation next year.
