The Black Lips are screening their tour documentary, Kids Like You & Me: A Middle East Tour Film, and performing live shows this fall.
The Atlanta rockers began to investigate the possibility of a tour with stops in the Middle East in 2009, and after two years it finally became a reality, in fall of 2012. There were a few hurdles along the way, including promoters who backed out last-minute in Jordan and Alexandria, Egypt, because the band had performed in Israel. A show in Erbil, Iraq, had to be changed because a government official viewed an explicit video of the band. It did all work out in the end, and The Black Lips were able to appear live in Alexandria and Erbil.
Kids Like You & Me follows the band and documents the Middle Eastern tour, including three stops in Egypt, where The Grateful Dead was the last American rock band to appear back in 1978. They were joined on the tour by Lebanese indie rock group Lazzy Lung and the film portrays the people of the Middle East just as they are: shopkeepers, graffiti artists, musicians, restaurant owners and more – hence the name of the documentary.
