Check out these live covers of Elliott Smith tunes done by Cat Power, Sky Ferreira and Zachary Cole Smith (DIIV) at a recent tribute concert.
This Monday the 21st marked the 10th anniversary of singer-songwriter Elliott Smith’s tragic death. Though his life was cut short, he left behind a legacy that prominent musicians came together to celebrate and pay tribute to Monday evening at Brooklyn’s Glasslands. Artists present included: Cat Power, Zachary Cole Smith, Sky Ferreira, Yoni Wolf, The Low Anthem and Luke Temple.
Zachary Cole Smith (DIIV) takes a potshot at Tenacious D and their involvement at a previous tribute concert, then launches into covers of “A Distorted Reality Is Now A Necessity To Be Free” and “Little One” with Sky Ferreira. It’s unclear how Smith attained a position from which he could criticize anyone’s rendition of (Elliott) Smith’s work, but these recordings do stir some of the feelings inspired by the originals. Also captured from that night is a partial recording of Cat Power and Ferreira covering “Pretty (Ugly Before)”.
