Pearl Jam, Live at Barclays Center, Brooklyn

Pearl Jam played an epic two-night run in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center this weekend. The band always brings its best to New York and these two stops on their current Lightning Bolt tour were no different. Friday night saw a two and a half hour show including several new songs which fell right in line with the many classics, and a few rarities, including Mother Love Bone’s “Chloe Dancer” and “Crown of Thorns,” an impromptu cover of Van Halen’s “Eruption” by guitarist Mike McCready and Pearl Jam’s own rarely played “Sleight of Hand.” For Saturday, the band ran a full three hours, only repeating ten of the 32 songs from Friday, crafting an entirely new set.

Eddie Vedder was particularly chatty both nights. In thanks to Barclays for hosting them and referencing Jay Z’s association with the arena, Vedder quipped, “We got 99 problems, but a place to play ain’t one!” Also generous with praise for the audience, he thanked fans of the Northeast for their support “even in the early days, touring with the Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Sonic Youth….” On Saturday, “We have some friends here tonight, people we’ve known for many, many years, from all over. You make us look really good in front of our friends.” Upon spotting a fan in the front row wearing a t-shirt in support of Every Mother Counts, a charity focusing on women’s healthcare dear to Vedder’s heart, he led the band in a surprise cover of “Leaving Here,” another live rarity.
