Make that garage stadium bounce with some pure rockin’ bro-metal. Red Fang has some real fun when it comes to writing head-banging material. Red Fang’s got rocker status—the only word to describe each individual song is “Anthem.” Formed in 2005, Red Fang consists of Bryan Giles, David Sullivan, and John Sherman (all from Party Time and a handful of other groups) and Aaron Beam (from Dark Forces and Lachrymator). Coming together, these guys can reach so many different prisms of rockdom it’s not even funny.
Alright, alright, alrightalright… So here’s the gist of what Whales and Leeches is: eleven album tracks and two bonus songs, bitchin’ CD art (that’s 3D if you go with the Deluxe Edition – GO DELUXE BRO!). Okay, so the guys have been around for a bit; okay, so they aren’t some young hot rockers—it’s rare that talent like this comes along in the youth of the musical community anyway. Listen to the composition of “Voices of the Dead”: there is a prog-rock build up and distinctive warmth between the harmonizing guitars and layered vocals. Now, if that isn’t fancy enough, “DOEN” opens the album with individualized instrumental buildup and exposes the simplicity that sends the listener into an immediate response of “Fuck it! Rock out!” “Blood Like Cream” is proving to be the radio and fan favorite as more and more exposure pops up for Red Fang’s newest release.
If these guys were British it would be absolutely proper to raise a ruptured fist in the air and proclaim, “Mayhem!!! Mayhem—that’s what all that is!”
“Dawn Rising” is heavy and its deep bottom carries out this damning prelude to a man’s end: “…tried to be right, becoming so wrong, until nothing was left and nothing was right.” It’s official: Highest Fidelity all the way around for Red Fang’s Whales and Leeches. Possibly pick of the year for 2013, Red Fang’s Whales and Leeches—it’s bangin’. Period.
