The CMJ Music Marathon is currently underway, but recent legal moves have cast some doubt on the future of the Festival. Metropolitan Entertainment, CMJ’s partner in an ill-fated merger that has spent the last few years quietly falling to pieces.
Go ahead, lift a pinky to the corner of your mouth and give us your best Dr. Evil. One million dollars may not sound like all that much, doubly so since we’re talking about the music industry. On the other hand, CMJ isn’t exactly a high-earner. Despite a reputation for hosting breakout stars like Lady Gaga or Avicii, the festival has never been far out of the red.
A partnership with Metropolitan Entertainment was meant to shore up these shortcomings, but may have come around to bite CMJ. Metropolitan is currently suing over allegations that CMJ failed to repay $600,000 worth of loans, and fradulently transferred their assets to shield them from collection. This year’s CMJ is set to continue until the 19th, with bands such as Local Natives and The Savages making appearances, but enjoy while you can – this lawsuit may spell trouble for future fests.
