The Main Event
Thirteen years ago Dan the Automator, Kid Koala and Del the Funky Homosapien whisked us away to a dystopian future on the band’s self-titled debut album Deltron 3030. The trio now returns with sixteen more apocalyptic revelations on The Event II. Deltron 3030 has brought along some friends for this tale, including the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zach de la Rocha and even The Lonely Island Boys to drop a few lines on this LP.
This album is packed with high quality jams. Even the skits sprinkled throughout (that on most albums feel like worthless filler) add to the illusion of the future presented before you, engulfing you further into the story. Even if you aren’t a huge hip hop fan don’t let that dissuade you from listening. The Event II is more like a space opera than an average rap record.
“Melding of the Minds,” featuring Zach de la Rocha, is one of the many stand-out tracks on this album. Del the Funky Homosapien and La Rocha make this feel like a rock song without the use of typical rock archetypes. Kid Koala and Dan the Automator do a fantastic job doing whatever the hell it is they do to construct joints like this. Faith No More’s Mike Patton provides background vocals on “City Rising From the Ashes,” which describes the events that took place transforming the world into the world it is in the future. “What is This Loneliness” deals with interplanetary wars, aliens and space travel. The wonderful thing about these songs is that each one could be turned into its own novella.
Deltron 3030 serves as a great vessel for these individuals to tell their fantastic sci fi story. This way of making music, with the purpose of telling a story, is a lost art; even when some venture into this territory, results rarely turn out as well as this.
