British pop idol Charli XCX unveils a garish and totally-not-exploitative new video for True Romance single “SuperLove,” shot in Tokyo’s Robot Restaurant.
As for inspiration, a press release cites female-fronted 80s bands The Waitresses, Bow Wow Wow, and the French yé-yé scene, which produced the moderately disturbing 1966 hit “Les Sucettes,” the phallic-imagery song with the lyric: “Annie loves lollipops, aniseed lollipops, when the sweet liquid runs down Annie’s throat, she is in paradise.” The yé-yé scene has been regarded as the origin of Japanese idol music, which has similar Lolita-like themes of susceptible innocence. Say’s Charli:
“SuperLove” is a song about running away and falling in love with someone and it being really dangerous and bad for you but still amazing, romantic and wonderful. “SuperLove” is the best drug and this song is about overdosing on it and falling in real deep.
