Soak it Up
Sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf supply vocals while Kris “Rain Man” Trindl brings the beats to this house party, entitled Get Wet. Collectively called Krewella, these three individuals have mixed together the best parts of various styles of electronic dance music to create an album that is not just jam packed with synths, bass and pop influenced vocals, but it’s also catchy as hell.
The first track off Get Wet is “Live For the Night,” and it’s the type of song that is destined to be in a Kia car commercial. It’s fun, energetic and is guaranteed to be stuck in your head for hours after you’ve heard it. On “We Go Down,” the sisters repeat the chorus, “If we go down / we all go down together” like a mantra while Rain Man mixes the beats like a chef with a new blender.
As the album continues, Krewella stick to the same formula song after song. About halfway through, things start to feel redundant. The lyrics are simple; if you’re looking for thought-provoking, insightful prose you’re definitely in the wrong place. The same can be said for the music; the melody and accompaniments are well-formed but innovation is not part of Krewella’s mission statement.
Krewella has a singular goal: create fun, friendly, catchy beat-heavy pop tunes. If you are searching for some fun music to add to your library or maybe you’re throwing an end of the summer bash, this album would be a perfect fit in your playlist (case in point: “Alive” is included on a compilation called Party Fun Summer 2013). Maybe you’re in search of a new song for your morning alarm clock. This LP is chock full of cheery, eye opening tunes. If none of those apply to you, then sadly, once again, you may be in the wrong place.
