Satirical heavy metal band, GWAR, is officially sick of waiting to be asked to perform at the Super Bowl. The band, taking matters into their own hands, have launched a petition to play the Super Bowl’s halftime show in 2015.
Best known for their graphic lyrics and elaborate, horror film-inspired costumes; GWAR have officially Initiated a petition on Change.org to perform at the 2015 Super Bowl Halftime Show. Launched just over a week ago, the group’s petition already boasts over 35,000 signatures, with only 14,000 left to go.
Perhaps the band’s recent visibility increase – including embarking on an enormous fall tour, releasing a new song, as well as a new album; have all been in preparation for the recently posted petition. Noting that their presence at the Super Bowl would make the event more of a spectacle, would expand viewership, and would “be more American than apple pie” (especially now that the band has their own beer); GWAR pleaded their case to fans (and non-fans alike), stating:
The time for GWAR to address the nation is NOW.
Every year people complain about who the halftime show is going to feature, now we are telling you who we want: WE WANT GWAR in 2015!
Why should articles like “Bruno Mars Announced For Super Bowl Halftime Show, Gwar Waits Until Next Year (Again)” (from Screen Junkies) be a joke?
We don’t want another year of sitting around talking through a muted, boring NFL Super Bowl halftime show. We want something different. We want a real spectacle that only GWAR can provide. Doesn’t the NFL want more viewers? Don’t advertisers want more people paying attention? This way everyone wins.
Plus, GWAR’s relationship with American football is one of the strongest in music. Front man Dave Brockie writes a football column for MetalSucks.com called “Necessary Roughness” even the “The Dan Patrick Show” has an Oderous mask on display. It’s been suggested by Sports Illustrated that GWAR should become mascots!
NFL must listen to the people. GWAR is more American than apple pie.

And so, if GWAR’s signature collecting continues to follow the current trend, it seems possible that the metal band might finally see a dream come true – and that we all might finally see a halftime spectacle to rival Janet Jackson’s star-pastied nipple. And let’s face it – with the group described by mxdwn as “an over-indulgence of gore; gross, offensive, comical, not whimsical… [and] in your face”, it sounds exactly like the kind of spectacle that the American public drools over.
