Anticipation never felt so lugubrious. Only a couple of days remain until the release of Mazzy Star’s fourth LP Seasons of Your Day, but watching the yawning, slide-projector montage for “California,” it might as well be a year.
It’s like the depressed cousin of “California” dreaming. Of course, the overburdened rhythm guitar and slightly hair-raising harmonies are par for the course for the reunion duo from Santa Monica who peaked with “Fade Into You” in the mid-90s—about when one might date the video based on the editing. Slow-mo tour footage and spacey Cali shots make up the bulk of the video.
Their own Rhymes of an Hour label will release Seasons of Your Day on September 23 in the UK and the following day for those stateside. After that, they’re taking their slow on the road. Ba-dum tsh.
