HEALTH Join Forces With Tyler Bates For Haunting New Single “Outer Dark”

HEALTH are back with another dose of industrial unease, this time teaming up with composer and musician Tyler Bates for their new collaborative single, “Outer Dark.” Released October 9, the track brings together HEALTH’s abrasive, electronic-heavy sound with Bates’ cinematic approach to production, resulting in a collaboration that feels dark, atmospheric, and deliberately unsettling.  The pairing makes sense for both artists. HEALTH have spent years pushing industrial rock into increasingly experimental territory, balancing crushing electronic textures with moments of unexpected vulnerability. Bates, meanwhile, has built a career moving between music and film, bringing a distinctly cinematic sensibility to his work. On “Outer Dark,” those worlds meet in a track that feels less concerned with immediate gratification than with building an atmosphere you can sit inside.

“Outer Dark” also marks another chapter in a creative relationship that has been developing for more than a decade. According to Bates, his work with HEALTH began in 2014 with the Atomic Blonde soundtrack and continued through the Dark Nights: Death Metal soundtrack and subsequent collaborations. “My collaborative work with HEALTH began in 2014 with ‘Atomic Blonde’ and continued through the ‘Dark Nights: Death Metal’ soundtrack and into recent times,” Bates explained. “‘Outer Dark’ feels to me like the natural evolution of our work together, while taking it somewhere entirely new.”

“Outer Dark” arrives via Bates’ new label, Gravel And Echo Recordings, and offers another example of how HEALTH continues to find compelling creative intersections outside the traditional boundaries of industrial rock. Theprp notes that what makes “Outer Dark” stand out is how naturally the two artists come together. HEALTH have always been good at balancing industrial noise and electronic experimentation with melodies that stick with you, and working with Bates adds another layer to that sound. Their history together is clear, but the track still feels like they’re pushing into something new rather than revisiting the same ground.
