Hydra Head’s former label manager Mark Thompson is the mustachioed star of Chicago hardcore band Pelican’s new B-movie-opium-nightmare of a music video. “Lathe Biosas” may bring you to tears (of sorts), or perhaps leave you wondering “what did I just watch?” Maybe both? You’ll just have to find that out for yourself.
Director Diona J. Mavis goes all out on this one, sending Thompson through a cinematic hell (of sorts) to…okay, so the story arc is difficult to follow. Interspersed in the madness are clips of the young post-metalheads doing some wicked headbanging. But watch closely: Stereogum points out that the seriousness of this project can be gleaned from its use of both opening AND closing credits. Indeed, the credits to film ratio is only slightly less than 1:3, a significant feat (of sorts).
All this comes shortly after the release of “Deny The Absolute,” which garnered great encouragement from a peculiar fan base which is on the whole as supportive as it is critical. Their newest album, Forever Becoming, hits shelves October 15th.
