Popular 80’s New Wave band, Tears for Fears has recently released a cover of Arcade Fire’s “Ready to Start”. This is the first song the band has released since their last album in 2004.
The cover has come as a pleasant surprise to fans. Not only is it the first song Tears for Fears has released in nearly a decade, the choice to cover a husband/wife Indie Rock group is interesting to say the least. The band has stated, “It’s not like the original,” in an interview with Rolling Stone, and made the decision as a teaser for their re-issue of 1983 album The Hurting and to “kick-start” the recording process for their upcoming studio album.
Consequence of Sound had this to say about the cover,
Tears for Fears and Arcade Fire are two bands I’ve never thought about simultaneously. Second, after hearing the cover, I don’t understand why that first thing is true. Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith handle the cover with a deftness few tributes manage, making the electronically ornate interpretation feel completely like a Tears for Fears song, while never robbing the original of its power. It’s a match few would’ve likely conceived of, but goddamn if it doesn’t come off splendidly.
