San Francisco’s beloved Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival has announced its 2013 lineup. The annual free festival will feature Bonnie Raitt, The Devil Makes Three, Chris Isaak and many more.
The free 3 day, 6 stage festival has drawn hundreds of thousands of people from across the globe (last year the head count was over 750,000) to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for an eclectic selection of live rock, folk and, of course, bluegrass. Founded in 2001 by venture capitalist and bluegrass fanatic Warren Hellman, the event has hosted the likes of Patti Smith, Emmylou Harris and Doc Boggs alongside contemporary musicians like Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and Old Crow Medicine Show. Originally titled “Strictly Bluegrass,” the “Hardly” was added in 2004 as the musicians and genres expanded. Hellman’s aim was always to keep the event focused on music and not driven by consumption, which lead him to turn down many sponsors over the years in order to make sure it stayed non-commercial and free. Though he passed away in December of 2011, he endowed the festival to continue unsponsored for at least the next 15 years.
Hardly Strictly will take place October 4th, 5th and 6th at Golden Gate Park’s Hellman Hollow (formerly Speedway Meadow). For news, lineup updates and ticket information visit the Hardly Strictly site.
