There’s something weirdly tragic about finding music in a trash can. Especially when it belongs to Joy Division, go figure. That’s right, Joy Division, back from the figurative grave, this is actually sort of spooky, come to think of it. Pitchfork broke the news, more to follow.
If you’re not sure what I mean by “spooky”, then give Closer a listen. Frontman Curtis’s voice is haunting enough on it’s own – then you realize that the record was released after his death. It’s never a good thing to remember such a great band strictly for a suicide, but Curtis’s legacy as one of music’s tragically young dead only adds to the ghostly quality of the band.
So there’s something appropriate about having a collection of their rare tapes rescued from the dustbin of Martin Hannett, the influential producer of the band. The finder of these relics (other bands, including New Order, another post-punk band) is Julia Adamson, assistant to the late Hannett. No real word yet on when you might expect to hear these, Adamson, after attempting to shop them out to band members, is currently searching for an interested collector. Expect some serious goosebumps if these ever do see the light of day.
