Star & Dagger – Tomorrowland Blues

Middle-Aged Metal Ladies

Ex-White Zombie rocker Sean Yseult, a New Orleans native, once again happily resides in The Big Easy after a hiatus following Hurricane Katrina. But she and bandmates Von Hesseling and Dava She Wolf, better known collectively as metal band Star & Dagger, recorded their latest album in Joshua Tree, CA. Known as a desert land that generally only inspires acid and mushroom trips, the location proved just right for these hard rocking ladies to record their first full-length LP, Tomorrowland Blues.

The album is quick: you get ten songs in the span of about a half hour, but that’s enough time. “In My Blood” is the perfect song to begin with: at once it sets the stage for the rest of the songs and you very quickly realize what you’ve gotten yourself into by listening to this album.  Follow-up track “End Of Days” keeps pace with Dava’s incessant pounding on the guitar and somehow manages to get a little heavier and darker. “Selling My Things” is a heavy, way slowed-down track (until the guitar solo) and the song most likely to get stuck in your head.

“Your Mama Was A Grifter” is rightfully the album’s single. It’s softer and catchier but by no means a bad tune. And this one’s got some gritty and bluesy New Orleans style integrated into it.

And there’s something to say about Von Hesseling’s voice. Not many women can pull off a sexy singing metal voice and also leave listeners able to comprehend all the lyrics.

Tomorrowland Blues is an album that absolutely demands attention. Three hot metal chicks howling with the bass turned way, way up? Immediate audience. Maybe it’s not the best album ever, but it’s safe to assume that creating the world’s greatest album is not what these ladies were going for. All in all, pretty badass. I certainly wouldn’t fuck with them.
