Hunx & His Punx – Street Punk

Halloween’s Coming Back

One of the best things about the return of “angry grrl” brand feminism in the past few years is the revival of snotty, lo-fi, female fronted bubblegum punk bands that remind everyone that ladies can rage just as hard as any guy, and Hunx & His Punx is one such band. Seth Bogart, known as Hunx of the gay pop group Gravy Train!!!!, has teamed up with two blonde babes to release Street Punk, a mere 20-minute-long trip down lady-punk memory lane. This ’90s grunge nostalgia-soaked record melds a number of long ignored, underrated styles into the perfect soundtrack for outings with your girl gang.

Sounding like the doo-wop inspired love child of Horrorpops and Bratmobile, Street Punk spans a range of punk subgenres, all with a grimy, riot grrl style kick. The album begins with “Bad Skin,” an example of their straight-forward no-nonsense garage punk style, with a catchy repetitive chorus, angsty lyrics about zits, and fuzzy guitar. On songs like “I’m Coming Back,” listeners will notice a distinct horror punk influence– that track in particular being a clear homage to The Misfits. Street Punk even includes a cover of the Beastie Boys song “Egg Raid on Mojo” which they manage to make all their own.

Hunx & His Punx are definitely a band to watch in the next few years, hopefully releasing albums even better than this. Street Punk is a catchy combination of bratty girl bands and horror-style pop-punk with some Shangri-La’s thrown in for good measure that will appeal to fans of old school and current punk alike. Though they’ve gone through a few lineup changes during their time, the current group of ‘Punx’ that Hunx has behind him are guaranteed to make you want to dye your hair blonde and dance around your bedroom once or twice.
