You can’t deny the breakdown. East Coast post-hardcore band Empty Flowers offers up a new lead single, the iron-booted brute “Quit,” in a double countdown towards their sophomore followup to numerical debut Six, the darkly clamorous Five.
Empty Flowers’ 2012 debut drew immediate attention from Stereogum and Pitchfork, who made comparisons to math-rock precedent Polvo and the post-hardcore minimalism of Lungfish, appropriate observations for a band whose core membership includes Bernie Romanowski and Randy Larsen of the established metalcore band Cable. Five spans eight weighty tracks—an increment up from Six‘s seven—totaling to just under thirty minutes of dystopian jams, comprising raw-emotion diatribes of leadman Christian McKenna and titanic orchestral breaks, which steadfastly transform in characteristic slow-motion development. Following the release, the band intends to carry on a tradition they started with Six, releasing over the course of 2013 a stream of remixes from the likes of Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu), Jeff Caxide (Palms, ISIS), and others.
