Although Broken Social Scene has been on an indefinite hiatus since 2010, their co-founder, Brendan Canning, has just announced that he is set to release his second solo album, You Gots 2 Chill.
Though the Canadian indie rock band Broken Social Scene has been MIA for the past three years, their co-founder certainly has not. Since 2010, Canning has been busy composing a soundtrack to Paul Schrader’s upcoming Lindsay Lohan spectacle, The Canyons; working on an ambitious interactive video-game/film project; reviving his long-dormant, pre-BSS indie-pop project Cookie Duster; as well as composing and producing his second solo album, You Gots 2 Chill. Regarded as the “most personal portrait to date of an artist who’s spent much of his two-decade career making other people sound better”, You Gots 2 Chill is scheduled to drop on October 1st, 2013, via SQE and his own Draper Street Records. Get a feel for the record by listening to its first song, “Plugged In”, which is currently availble for free download on Canning’s official website.
Much as Broken Social Scene was famously born in co-founder Kevin Drew’s basement, Canning’s solo efforts have come to fruition in the musician’s living room in Toronto. A reflection of Canning’s private world, You Gots 2 Chill is ripe with an intentional homespun vibe that transports you right into the living room with him. Although the album does not easily align with any singular genre, it ambitiously forges a balance of softly whispered melodies and heady atmosphere that belongs to a lineage of understated experimentalism.
You Gots 2 Chill is a monumental album for Canning on multiple levels. Though technically the second release to bear Brendan’s name on the cover, You Gots 2 Chill feels much more like a solo effort than 2008’s stylistically varied, guest-list-stacked debut record, Something For All of Us. You Gots 2 Chill is also the first project Canning has launched under his own independent label (in partnership with L.A.-based music company SQE), as well as the first album he has recorded without the assistance of Broken Social Scene or its umbrella organization, Arts & Crafts. All in all, You Gots 2 Chill promises to be yet another great work influenced by Canning’s distinct brilliance.
