Rap for Rap’s Sake
On Botzy’s 3rd full length album, Buck Fotzy, this Minnesota resident claims to have, “completely took everything I had learned, patterns, the motions of how I created things, and scratched it all.” As a result, Buck Fotzy sounds fresh and original. This rapper takes the classic elements of a hip hop track, polishes and spruces them up a bit and allows the listener to reacquaint himself with what made them fall in love with this type of music in the first place.
“I Was In the Jaws” starts out simple, a mere break beat rhythm accompanied by short horn bursts, but by the time Botzy reaches first verse, your neck is sore from the unconscious head bobbing. The whole album has somewhat of a blues feel, but it’s most prevalent in the song “Thrill is Gone.” From the honky-tonk piano to the crooned chorus, the entire instrumental is dirty from mud dredged from the Mississippi Delta.
“See us with a smile but our lips stay sealed / We’re always off balanced so of course we got to kneel,” Botzy points out on “Bandwagon Massacre.” Those previously mentioned polished hip hop elements all take the stage here. If Botzy truly forgot everything he knew before going into this maybe other producers need to have a stint of temporary amnesia before entering the studio as well.
On “Burger Jones” Botzy exclaims, “This is rap for the sake of making rap music / All the kids attached to making crap music.” If this were a movie instead of an album, that statement would be the tag line on the poster. Buck Fotzy doesn’t reinvent the wheel, what it does though is show that there is still ways this wheel hasn’t been used.
